A joint project between Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and the West Wales Rivers Trust (WWRT) to open the upper reaches of the Eastern Cleddau to migratory fish has been completed. The removal of the weir at Vicar’s Mill is the culmination of more than six years of planning by NRW and WWRT and will play a key role in improving the health of the River Cleddau and its fish population.
Dave Charlesworth, Senior Fisheries Officer for NRW, said:
“There has been a weir at Vicar’s Mill since the 1800s when water power was used for milling. In more recent times the weir height was increased to provide water for a fish farm and a fish pass was built at the same time to allow fish to negotiate the weir.
“Unfortunately, the fish pass tended to block with debris, preventing access to the upper Eastern Cleddau for a variety of migratory fish species, this has been a problem because the river is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a number of migratory fish species, such as brook and river lamprey, are features of the designation.
“Removal of the structure will improve access to more than 20kms of upstream fish habitat and restore the natural river geomorphology.
“The scheme also hopes to spike an improvement in salmon and sea trout population numbers which have been under pressure over recent years and bring a much-needed economic boost for local fisheries.
“Man-made structures in rivers also interrupt gravel movement and fragment whole river catchments, reducing the quality of habitat available. Upper parts of river catchments tend to be cooler and protected, to a certain extent, from the worst effects of climate change so their removal effectively future proofs the river and its ecology.”
Work to dismantle the weir and fish pass began on 1 September and was carried out by an experienced local contractor who completed the task in just three days. The project was managed by WWRT who applied for all the necessary consents to enable the project to proceed, appointed the contractor and managed the delivery to ensure that all the required environmental protections were in-place given the sensitive nature of the river. The work was completed without incident and it is now hoped that all migratory fish species will be able to access the whole Eastern Cleddau catchment to spawn and complete their various life cycles.

“The removal of Vicar’s Mill weir is the culmination of more than six years of collaboration between NRW and WWRT, during which the scheme was modelled and carefully designed to consider the special environmental features of the site. We are grateful to Welsh Government and NRW for providing the funds to facilitate the delivery of this significant project.
“The completion of this project is a key element in the efforts to improve the health of the Eastern Cleddau for all species and the Trust is very much looking forward to continuing working in partnership with NRW, to ascertain how successful the removal of the structure has been at assisting with improvements to fish populations.”
NRW will continue to work with partners to explore more river restoration opportunities like this, or working with natural processes through the South West Wales Area Statement work. There will be particular focus on opportunities within the Milford Haven and Swansea Bay areas.
They are two of 10 opportunity catchment areas NRW has identified for focussed work on sustainable management of the water environment.
Mae prosiect ar y cyd rhwng Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru (CNC) ac Ymddiriedolaeth Afonydd Gorllewin Cymru (YAGC) i agor rhannau uchaf afon Cleddau Ddu i bysgod mudol wedi’i gwblhau. Mae tynnu’r gored yn Vicar’s Mill yn benllanw dros chwe blynedd o gynllunio gan CNC ac YAGC a bydd yn chwarae rhan allweddol yn y gwaith o wella iechyd Afon Cleddau a’i phoblogaeth bysgod.

“Bu cored ym Vicar’s Mill ers dechrau’r bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg pan ddefnyddid pŵer dŵr ar gyfer melino. Yn fwy diweddar, cynyddwyd uchder y gored i ddarparu dŵr ar gyfer fferm bysgod ac adeiladwyd llwybr pysgod ar yr un pryd i ganiatáu i bysgod oresgyn y gored.
“Yn anffodus, roedd y llwybr pysgod yn tueddu i lenwi gyda sbwriel, gan rwystro mynediad amrywiaeth o rywogaethau pysgod mudol i afon Cleddau Ddu uchaf, a thrwy gael gwared ar y gored rydym yn gobeithio cywiro hynny. Mae hyn wedi bod yn broblem gan fod yr afon yn Ardal Cadwraeth Arbennig (ACA) ac mae nifer o rywogaethau pysgod mudol, megis llysywen bendoll yr afon a’r nant, yn cyfrannu at y dynodiad.
“Bydd tynnu’r strwythur yn gwella mynediad i fwy nag 20 cilometr o gynefin i bysgod i fyny’r afon ac yn adfer geomorffoleg naturiol yr afon.
“Mae’r cynllun hefyd yn gobeithio ysgogi gwelliant yn nifer y poblogaethau o eogiaid a siwin sydd wedi bod o dan bwysau dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf a dod â hwb economaidd y mae mawr ei angen i bysgodfeydd lleol.
“Mae strwythurau artiffisial mewn afonydd hefyd yn amharu ar symudiad graean ac yn rhannu dalgylchoedd cyfan, gan leihau ansawdd y cynefin sydd ar gael. Mae rhannau uchaf dalgylchoedd afonydd yn tueddu i fod yn oerach a chânt eu diogelu, i ryw raddau, rhag effeithiau gwaethaf newid hinsawdd, felly mae tynnu’r strwythurau hyn i bob pwrpas yn diogelu’r afon a’i hecoleg at y dyfodol.”
Dechreuodd y gwaith i dynnu’r gored a’r llwybr pysgod ar 1 Medi ac fe’i cynhaliwyd gan gontractwr lleol profiadol a gwblhaodd y dasg mewn dim ond tridiau. Rheolwyd y prosiect gan YAGC a wnaeth gais am yr holl gydsyniadau angenrheidiol i alluogi’r prosiect i fynd rhagddo. Aeth yr Ymddiriedolaeth ati hefyd i benodi’r contractwr a rheoli’r ddarpariaeth i sicrhau bod yr holl fesurau diogelu amgylcheddol gofynnol ar waith o ystyried natur sensitif yr afon. Cwblhawyd y gwaith heb unrhyw broblemau a gobeithir bellach y bydd pob rhywogaeth o bysgod mudol yn gallu cael mynediad i ddalgylch cyfan afon Cleddau Ddu i silio a chwblhau eu gwahanol gylchoedd bywyd.

“Mae tynnu cored Vicar’s Mill yn benllanw dros chwe blynedd o gydweithio rhwng CNC ac YAGC, lle cafodd y cynllun ei fodelu a’i lunio’n ofalus i ystyried nodweddion amgylcheddol arbennig y safle. Rydym yn ddiolchgar i Lywodraeth Cymru a CNC am ddarparu’r arian i hwyluso’r gwaith o gyflawni’r prosiect arwyddocaol hwn.
“Mae cwblhau’r prosiect hwn yn elfen allweddol yn yr ymdrechion i wella iechyd afon Cleddau Ddu ar gyfer pob rhywogaeth ac mae’r Ymddiriedolaeth yn edrych ymlaen yn fawr at barhau i weithio mewn partneriaeth â CNC, er mwyn canfod pa mor llwyddiannus fu tynnu’r strwythur o ran helpu gyda gwelliannau i boblogaethau pysgod.”
Bydd CNC yn parhau i weithio gyda phartneriaid i archwilio mwy o gyfleoedd fel hyn i adfer afonydd, neu weithio gyda phrosesau naturiol drwy waith Datganiad Ardal De-orllewin Cymru. Bydd ffocws penodol ar gyfleoedd yn ardaloedd Aberdaugleddau a Bae Abertawe.
Maent yn ddau o 10 ardal dalgylch cyfle mae CNC wedi’u nodi ar gyfer gwaith penodol i reoli’r amgylchedd dŵr yn gynaliadwy.
